At the request/inspiration of !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , here are some before and after pics of a recent remodel we did to part of the upstairs of our house.
Before:
And after:
This oval-shaped dining room table and floral chairs got sold and replaced with an original mid-century modern dining room table since this was taken.
That big brown piece in the corner was also sold.
As was the matching table with glass display case in the back.
Our house was built in the early 50's and my dad loves mid-century modern design, so that’s the theme we kind of tried to go for.

I loved the upholstery on the Eames chairs. What is that?

It’s a brown leather, but it’s got some texture to the color. Looks kind of like cigar paper.

Ironically, someone DID kill Barney in order to upholster our old couch.

Love your built ins. Need to do that to my bonus room asap, so my wife quits dragging her feet and unpack all of her books and shit. (I literally have nothing in this house besides furniture)

The white ones by the fireplace or the barrister cases?

Thank you! I know they are actually old and not reproductions, but other than that I don’t know much about them. I’m sure my dad does though.

What type of chairs are those in the living room? They look cool but are they comfy?

The brown ones are called Eames chairs. They are very difficult to get out of, but they are so unbelievably comfortable that you’ll never want to.

That makes them even cooler. They fit the room really well.

Looks great. Are those floors laminate or hardwood?
I am doing my floors too, and I just bought $2400 worth of laminate from home depot this morning.

As others have said, the built-in’s are fantastic and complete the look. I won't lie, I’m a sucker for wood trim on midcentury homes, doing the windows in white with a cherry or lightly stained maple baseboard would be incredible if you want a project for a couple weekends ;)

Wow, two Eames chairs. Aren't you fancy! Really though. That's awesome.

Those are Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman. They’re hella expensive. Do people still say hella? Anyway, they’re icons of modern furniture design.
The set (one chair and one ottoman) starts at about $4950 for a basic walnut frame and base leather but the oiled Santos Palisander frame and Royal Leather will run the price up to $8500 really quick.

Very nice. We are in the throes of getting our kitchen remodeled. Well, in the throes of beginning to get it done. Tell me about your cabinets.

They are reproductions, if that lessens the fancification any.

What would you like to know?
We kept the old cabinets, just stained them and installed new handles. Keeps the cost lower while still giving the look we wanted.

Not particularly. Reproductions of the Eames 670/671 aren’t cheap by any means, and those are excellent reproductions. Even my homosexual furniture snob eyes couldn’t tell a difference. Even the legs are correct, where the chair has five legs and the ottoman has four. And the rubber shock mounts look like the real deal.
I think the brown leather on those chairs may have just replaced the classic black as my favorite color on the Eames Lounge Chair.
Great remodel, btw!

I sent the link to my wife, and she noticed that you had kept the old cabinets. We are looking to replace ours, as the old ones are cheap and terrible. We’re considering IKEA, but the contractor we’re talking to on Friday won’t do them. We’re also talking to other people as well. I’m also torn about involving a contractor at all. I know they will coordinate the subs, but there’s really not that much to do in our kitchen.

Are you Jewish? I see a pretty sweet shofar and Shabbat candle holder.
Reminds me last shabbat my sister told us about a moment she had while explaining what a shofar was to friends. She had said “Yeah, all jews have war horns in their homes” and realized just how crazy that sounded. Wooo tradition!

Thanks! I am glad you like it! And good to hear these are high-quality reproductions. They are hella comfortable, I’m sitting in them as I type.

The cabinets were one of the few things we did ourselves. I would say it all depends on what needs to be done vs. what you’re comfortable doing. I love Ikea stuff, but it’s not the most durable long-term.

Good eye! Yes, we’re Jewish. No, I cannot make any sort of decent sound come out of that giant toenail thing.

It took me a while to figure it out. It’s tricky. Also, your remodel is very nicely done. Looks like it’s going to be a much more relaxing place to be.

When I first saw them I thought “These look neat, but there’s no way they’ll be comfortable.”
Boy was I wrong.
